VIRTUAL FOOD DRIVE
THIS WAS THE SITUATION BEFORE COVID 19, SINCE THEN THINGS HAVE GOTTEN MUCH WORSE FOR MANY NEW YORK FAMILIES….
Food Poverty in New York City
It is estimated that approximately 1.5 million people living within the five boroughs of New York City depend on food pantries and soup kitchens to provide enough food for themselves and their families. This number is mainly comprised of women, children, seniors, the disabled and the working poor (meaning they are not paid enough to cover just their cost of living). Increased financial pressures such as unemployment, low wages, healthcare cost and the steady increase in food prices have added extra strain to the budgets of low-income New Yorkers and even an increasing number of New Yorkโs middle-income. The problem is further compounded by the low-cost, poor-quality food sold in most low-income neighborhoods.
Without access to affordable health-giving food residents of these neighborhoods have higher incidents of diet-related illnesses which include obesity, hypertension and diabetes. Unfortunately since 2003 there has been a 60 percent increase in the number of New Yorkers experiencing difficulties affording food. Immediate help is needed.
Please donate to our Virtual Food Drive hosted by the Food Bank for New York City. Our goal is to reach $1500 in donations by October 31, 2013. The food bank has wholesale purchasing abilities which allow it to purchase large quantities of food thus doubling and sometimes even tripling each food dollar donation.
Your donation of $4 can purchase 50 pounds of potatoes, $10 buys 3 gallons of milk, $12 buys 24 pounds of brown rice or 20 pounds of ground turkey, $25 buys 25 cantaloupes and $33 buys 30 dozen eggs.
DUE TO SOCIAL DISTANCING WE HAVE TEAMED UP WITH CITY HARVEST TO INVITE YOU TO DONATE TO THE FUNDRAISER TO HELP FEED MANY IN DESPERATE NEED.
When collected the funds are given to City Harvest from #WitchesGivingBack
